Klaus Eder (born 1946) is a graduate of Frankfurt University and a doctor of
sociology of the University of Constance (1976). In 1984 he took his Habilitation
at the University of Düsseldorf, where he was Privatdozent from 1985 onwards;
he was also Heisenberg Fellow and research director of the study group for social
science research, Munich. His works have dealt chiefly with the theory of social
evolution (origin of societies based on the State; development of law; genesis
and history of civil society in Germany) and on the theory of action (collective
action and its coordination through law; theory of political action). His current
research is into new social movements and public space, especially in a comparative
perspective, and into the sociological theory of culture. He directs a comparative
research project on environmentalism in Europe. He has left his fulltime post
at the Euroepan University Institute and was nominated external professor in
1996. He is now Professor of Sociology at the Humboldgt-Universität zu
Berlin.

Robert Holton is Professor of Sociology and Professorial Fellow of Trinity College.
His research and teaching interests include globalization and global networks,
historical sociology, and social theory. His most recent book, Making Globalization,
was published by Palgrave MacMillan in 2005. Professor Holton is a member of
the international editorial boards of the Journal of Classical Sociology, The
European Journal of Sociology, and the Journal of Sociology. He is also part
of the editorial team compiling The Encyclopaedia of Globalization. In 1995
he was elected to a Fellowship of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
